Bexar was the original Department of the Texas portion of Texas and Coahilia, formed by the 1824 Constitution. In 1831 Nacogdoches Department was split out. In March, 1834 a new department of the Brazos was formed in the area between the Lavaca River and the Brazos-Trinity watershed, extending to the Red River, with the capital at San Felipe de Austin. For local government purposes, the departments were divided into municipalities. Bexar was one of four Departments during the late Mexican period, which covered most of western Texas as far as El Paso. Bexar District, created 3/17/1836 at time of Texas independence, Bexar County created 12/20/1836, organized 1837. Since 1860, when partitioning of Bexar County began, 128 counties have been carved from it. Until 1858 the Zavala(Zavalla) County area was attached to the municipality of San Antonio, then to Kinney County. All other references in the Texas Online collection refer to Bexar District/Municipality/County. -Texas Handbook Online: Bexar County, Mexican Government of Texas, Zavala County |
