First organized by Mexico as Tenehaw Municipality, with Nashville the most important town. Tenehaw Municipality name changed to Shelby Municipality January 11, 1836; Shelby County created March 18, 1836 and named for Isaac Shelby, US Revolutionary soldier from Tennessee. organized 1837 with the name of Nashville changed to Shelbyville.
