County created 4/4/1846 from parts of Victoria, Jackson and Matagorda Counties, organized 7/13/1846 and named for John C. Calhoun, the senator from South carolina that advocated Texas Statehood. Lavaca was the first county seat, but the early tent village of Karlshafen became Indianola, the second County Seat in 1852 because it was more important.
