The area was part of Red River Municipality until 1837, when it became part of the new Fannin County. County created 1/13/1858 and named for William E. Throckmorton, an early settler. Williamsburg was chosen as the first County Seat, but the county was not organized until 3/18/1879. By then, Throckmorton was named the County Seat. -Handbook of Texas Online: Throckmorton County |
