County created 8/21/1876 from Bexar County and named for Benjamin Franklin Terry, commander of the Eighth Texas Cavalry (Terry's Texas Rangers). It was attached to Young County until 1881, then Throckmorton County. In 1883 administration was by Howard County, and in 1889 Martin County.
