This area was part of Gonzales County created by The Congress of the Republic of Texas in 1836. By 1847, residents petitioned the Texas legislature to establish Plum Creek County with Lockhart Springs as County Seat. Caldwell County was created 3/6/1848 from Gonzales County, organized 8/7/1848. Although the legislature did not say why the name Caldwell was chosen, it was probably in honor of Mathew Caldwell, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence -Handbook of Texas Online:Caldwell County
