County named for Michael Branamour Menard, the founder of Galveston. County established 1/22/1858 from Bexar County. Residents attempted to organize the county in 1866, but when it failed, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Mason County. Organized 5/8/1871, includes no territory from previous Menard Judicial District of 1842, which was created from part of Liberty County and covered most of the present Tyler Co and part of the future Hardin County. -Handbook of Texas Online:Menard County, Menard Judicial County, Tyler County |
