The area was part of the Mexican municipality of Nacogdoches. The Congress of the Republic of Texas established Houston County in 1837. County established 2/5/1840 as first of 16 Judicial Counties, originally known as Northern Division of Liberty County, included most of area of present Polk and eastern San Jacinto Counties, name changed to Trinity County 12/7/1841, abolished, presently established 2/11/1850, organized 4/1/1850. Sumter was declared the County Seat in 1854. In May 1873 after the Sumter Courthouse burned, Trinity became the County Seat.
