San Felipe Municipality established 1828 as part of Department of the Brazos. 15 additional municipalities were created from this area by 1836. Austin County was created 3/17/1836 from Austin District and organized 1837. A region added in the south was broken off in 1837 to form Fort Bend County. San Felipe became the county seat when partially rebuilt after the Texas revolution. Bellville was voted the county seat in 12/1846. A wide strip of territory in the east remained in the county until the end of Reconstruction. -Handbook of Texas: Austin County
