The County was named for William Beck Ochiltree, a Republic of Texas judge, secretary of treasury, and an officer in the army of the Confederacy. The county was created in 1876 from Bexar District. Ochiltree became the county seat in 1889 when the county was organized. Perryton was made the county seat on the railroad in 1919, and the entire previous town of Ochiltree was moved there in 1920. (The previous town of Wawaka also moved to the railroad and changed names to Waka.) -Handbook of Texas Online: Ochiltree County |
