Runnels was one of 23 counties formed by the Texas Legislature (2/1/1858: Handbook of Texas Online, Rootsweb, Schmidt or 12/1/1858:TxGenweb) from Bexar and Travis Counties. It was named after Hiram G. Runnels, former Governor of Mississippi and a member of the Texas Legislature. The county was attached to Coleman County for administration. A petition of 1/12/1880 and election of 2/16/1880 organized the county. A meeting of 3/10/1880 made Walthall the temporary County Seat. The eiction of 4/14/1880 gave Runnels City the County Seat. When the railroad bypassed Runnels City, the county seat was moved to Ballinger 1/2/1888 which was incorporated in 1892. -Rootsweb, Handbook of Texas Online: Runnels County |
