The county was named for Williamson Simpson Oldham, pioneer Texas lawyer and Confederate senator. The county was established from Bexar County in 1876 and organized in 1880 with Tascosa, previously called Plaza Atascosa as county seat. Sixteen unorganized Panhandle counties were attached to Oldham County for administrative purposes. New Tascosa appeared farther away by a railroad, and the county seat was moved to Vega in 1915. The ruins of the original Tascosa were replaced by Cal Farley's Boys Ranch |
