The County was created 2/1/1858 from Bexar and Travis Counties and named for Alamo defenders Edward, James and George Taylor. Taylor County was attached to Bexar and Travis Counties for administrative purposes until 1873, when assigned to Eastland County. The county was organized 7/3/1878 with Buffalo Gap as the County Seat. The Texas and Pacific Railroad bypassed the town, and Abilene became the County Seat in 1883. -Handbook of Texas Online: Taylor County |
