Originally named Buchanan County after President James Buchanan, the county was renamed in 1861 to honor Alexander H. Stephens, the vice president of the Confederate States of America. Stephens County, created 1/22/1858 from Bosque County as Buchanan County after President James Buchanan, name changed to Stephens County 1861 under Confederacy to honor Alexander H.
