Wilson County named for Somervell expedition member and legislator James C. Wilson. Wilson County established 2/13/1860 from Bexar and Karnes Counties, organized 8/6/1860. The Constitutional Convention of 1868-69 altered the boundary between Wilson and Guadalupe Counties and changed the name to Cibolo County but the name was never applied. Another boundary change in 1874 increased the area, and the name was changed back to Wilson County. John W. Longsworth, appointed judge and county clerk by the military government during congressional Reconstruction, moved the county records to Lodi in 1867, beginning a controversy about the location of the county seat that lasted for more than a decade. The county seat was returned to Sutherland Springs in March 1871 but moved back to Lodi in July 1871. An election was finally held in November 1873 to determine the location of county government, and the new town of Floresville, near the geographic center of the county, was selected as the new county seat. The citizens of Sutherland Springs called for a new election in 1883, but Floresville once again won by a margin of 250. -Handbook of Texas Online: Wilson County |

This list contains or will contain all post offices known from Texas. Noted also are whether recent offices have had at least one precancel type, as listed in the Precancel Stamp Society's Town and Type Catalog of the United States and Territories, Sixth edition, Summer 1998, and from Fosters' personal knowledge. A link is provided to detailed precancel data for that location. The precancel device(s) may or may not still exist. An * indicates a discontinued post office or name change. Pester the active post offices so that devices can be retained or ordered. They may be found many times, but only have to be thrown away once. Precancel devices are not usually issued to branches, stations or contract post offices. Please see plans page for color legend. |
