Travis County, Texas Post Office Lineage Information Page

Waterloo, renamed Austin, was approved 1/19/1840 as the State Capital. A few days later, Travis County was named for Alamo defender William Barret Travis and created 1/25/1840 from Bastrop District, organized 4/8/1843 with Austin as the County Seat. Counties that were later carved from Travis County include Callahan (1858), Coleman (1858), Comal (1846), Gillespie (1848), Hays (1848), Burnet (1852), Brown and Lampasas (1856), Eastland, Runnels and Taylor (all 3 1858). -Handbook of Texas Online: Travis County

PROPOSED DISTRICT OF TRAVIS: H.J.R. No. 64 A JOINT RESOLUTION proposing a constitutional amendment allowing the legislature to establish all or part of Travis County as a special district comprising the seat of government. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Article XVI, Texas Constitution, is amended by adding Section 72 to read as follows: Sec. 72. (a) The legislature by law may establish all or part of Travis County as a special district comprising the seat of government to be known as the District of Travis. (b) The district shall be governed as provided by law. Unless otherwise provided by law, the district is not subject to the provisions of this constitution relating to county or municipal government. (c) In apportioning the senate and house of representatives, the legislature shall consider the district to be a county. SECTION 2. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be submitted to the voters at an election to be held on November 2, 1999. The ballots shall be printed to provide for voting for or against the proposition: "The constitutional amendment allowing the legislature to establish all or part of Travis County as a special district comprising the seat of government." -Text of a bill which died in committee, introduced in 76th regular session of Texas Legislature (1999) by Rep.
