The county was named for early Matagorda legislators Bailey and Thomas Jones Hardeman. It was created 2/21/1858 from Fannin District. From 1881 to 1884, Wilbarger County was the administrator. Hardeman County was organized 12/31/1884. In 1891 Foard County was formed from Hardeman, Cottle, King and Knox Counties, leaving Margaret, first called Argurita (the former County Seat) in Foard County. -Handbook of Texas Online: Hardeman County |
