Small sites tend to run well on small systems. However, some have been not been scored rigorously enough, in line with current award program philosophy. After some experience with overall scores, more objective point values are now provided. They can be modified without warning as more review patterns are seen, since the results reflect on this award program. DETAILED SCORING: Score starts at 100%. Final score will not be over 100%. Awards are given for 70% or above. Navigation: No navigation on dependent pages (back key required) = -30% (exception for large graphics under thumbnail) Back navigation on large graphics under thumbnail = +5% Complete navigation on large graphics under thumbnail = +10% More than one way to get around e.g. graphic/text navigation, bottom navigation duplicate of top = +10% Back button only on dependent pages = -10% (causes multiple load time for each page change, since navigation page must repeatedly be loaded.) Next button (linear navigation) only on dependent pages = -10% Previous/Next only on dependent pages = -8% All pages referenced on every page, framed or unframed (good for small sites) = +5% Section/Subsection navigation (good for large sites, not possible to put links to all pages on every page) = +10% Design: Layout (creativity points) = 0% to +20% Asks to install unwanted plug-ins = -10% (Many of these may not work on 16 bit computers anyway.) Everything Centered text, which is unjustified on both sides (unless poetry, a wedding invitation or a supper menu) = -20% Excessively large text = -5% to -15% Lines of text fill complete screen from left to right, per observed page = -5% Excessive blinking text or annoying animated background, per observed page = -5% Music: ignored. My small computer has no sound card. My large computers have volume controls. Right click disabled = -3% Mouse followers on first page = -1% Mouse followers on most or all pages = -5% Windows 2000 runtime errors, per occurrence = -1% (Severe errors can cause disqualification.) Marquee text scroll = -1% per scroll Low contrast, hard-to-read text or text on similar background = -5% Domain address: I don't care where your site is. Slowness of free sites could be penalized in page load time. Load time over 5 minutes on longest page on 56k modem = -100% (disqualification point on smallest computer) My ISP disconnects after 5 minutes of inactivity. THIS INCLUDES RUNNING TIME FOR A FLASH INTRODUCTION. Load time 3-5 minutes on longest page on 56k modem = -20% Lake Applets, and animation will unduly influence load time and will be scored there. Flash introductions will not be skipped for timing. Minimal appropriate animation integrated into the design can be rewarded. Long pages without "_top" links = -5% Horizontal Scroll over 1024x768 = -10% Horizontal Scroll over 800x600 =-5% Broken internal links = -1% per observed occurrence (external links can not always be controlled, but neglect of links to sites known to be down for a while will be noted and considered as internal links.) Broken images = -1% per observed occurrence (The new .PNG graphics appear as broken, but I can not display them in 16 bit browsers and do not deduct for them.) I do not penalize for having more than a few awards since I have many myself. This should be an indication of a better site, not a bad one. However, no citations/laudatios for awards = -5% No e-mail link to webmaster (Contact forms may not always work and some award deliveries are by autoresponder.) = -5% Must sign guestbook to win award = -5% Content: Overwhelming Knowledge of subject, not merely pictures of family or pets = +1% to +10% More than 10 content pages = 0% to +10% 5-10 content pages (small sites) = -5% Content does not include chat rooms, message boards, guest books, greeting card shops, links, webring or membership pages. Copyright violations (per image) = -5% Less than 5 content pages = -20% Spelling errors, per observed occurrence, not in context = -1% Grammar errors, per observed occurrence, not in context = -2% Foreign language without English version = -5%, since spelling and grammar are not judged Portal site with only links elsewhere = -30% pornographic, hateful or satanic content = -100% I am not a follower, but gentle, family safe religions such as Wicca and Paganism are not hateful here.
