There are many wonderful and caring veterinarians in Austin and I hope you have found yours to be the best. Petsmart and Petco are national entities with which most of us are familiar on a weekly basis. Austin also has some local ‘treasures,’ both in business and rescue. The following are some with whom I've personally enjoyed a pet/animal-oriented relationship:
ANIMAL TRUSTEES OF AUSTIN
Tel. 450-0111
WEBSITE: WWW.ANIMALTRUSTEES.ORG
This organization was formed by Missy and Bobbie over fifteen years ago. They and their volunteers have worked tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home countless cats and dogs who would otherwise have been euthanized (or worse). The low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics have terrific volunteer veterinarians supported by a caring staff and top notch equipment. My Nana was an ATA rescue whom I adopted thirteen years ago.
WEST END GROOMING
2906 San Gabriel
478-1007
WEBSITE: WWW.WESTENDGROOMING.COM
Kit and Fran are both special animal friends who take into their shop the pups ATA fosters and give them a real celebrity spa day so as adoption hopefuls they are all beauty queens and kings. When they leave West End those pups know they are at their best. They're Hot Stuff! Kudos to the ladies for giving someone's throw-away-dog a new ‘do’ as well as a chance for a loving, happy and forever home.
BUCK MOORE FEED AND PET SUPPLY
5237 North Lamar
451-3469
WEBSITE: WWW.BUCKMOREFEED.COM unavailable
This family-owned business has been in operation for thirty-five years with good reason. Ken Bushong and his son, John, are knowledgeable, personable, honest and very particular about the products they carry. One can find top-end pet and livestock feed, an extensive selection of bird seeds, garden seeds, organic products, pet toys and accessories and a recently added gift section. They are worth a visit and, ladies, they will carry your large dog food bag to the car without being asked. In fact, they'll beat you to the door - sack in hand!
WILDLIFE RESCUE
472-WILD
WEBSITE: WWW.AUSTINWILDLIFERESCUE.ORG
What a wonderful service these people perform for our extensive wildlife population. They treat and rehabilitate birds, squirrels, opossums, racoons and deer with the end goal being the release of healthy animals back into their proper habitat. Like most animal rescue groups they are usually underfunded but somehow the in-house and field volunteers manage to heep working their wonders. They deserve every donation and more!
CAMP4PAWS
300-2267
WEBSITE: WWW.CAMP4PAWSAUSTIN.COM
Casey and her staff are terriffic and provide an uproariously fun and happy atmosphere for pups of all ages and sizes. I have several client-pups who go to day-camp as well as for extended visits and love their 'vacations' there. Parents, too, love knowing that their cherished 'kids' are not only catered to but observed very closely for any signs of distress or loneliness. Plus, the kenneling facilities are all inside so the 'kids' are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Casey's camp is a great spot!
